Dr. Gordon A.R. Edwards is an ordained Elder serving in the New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. For the past 36 years, he has been privileged to pastor congregations in the United States of America (30 yrs: Englewood NJ; Brooklyn, Bronx, & Peekskill, NY), Central America and the Caribbean (6yrs: Antigua, Jamaica, Republic of Panama, & the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago).

He studied at the United Theological College of the West Indies, Jamaica (Dip Ministerial Studies), the University of the West Indies, Mona Jamaica (BA), Drew University Theological and Graduate Schools, New Jersey (MDiv, & MPhil), International University of Graduate Studies, St. Kitts (PhD in Pastoral Psychotherapy with concentration in Psychoanalysis), and the Graduate Theological Foundation, Indiana (PsyD in Clinical Psychology and currently ABD in Religion & Psychoanalysis). He also completed Post-Graduate Residencies and Certificates at the Blanton-Peale Graduate Institute, NY in the areas of Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychoanalysis, and Pastoral Psychotherapy.

He is credentialed as a Psychotherapist. In New York State, he is licensed in two separate mental health professions: Psychoanalysis and Marriage and Family Therapy. He also completed certifications in Spiritual Direction, Strategic Transformational Life Coaching, and Mediation. He holds professional memberships in several organizations: the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress (AAETS) - Diplomate status; National Center for Crisis Management (NCCM) - Diplomate status; American Association of Marriage & Family Therapy (AAMFT) – Clinical Fellow & Approved Supervisor status; the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP); and is recognized as a Pastoral Psychotherapist by the Endorsing Agency of the United Methodist Church. Having been trained and Certified by Faith Trust as a Trainer of Trainers in Clergy Sexual Ethics and Boundary, he served for 11 years on the New York Annual Conference of UMC Taskforce on Clergy Sexual Ethics and Boundary Issues. Presently, he serves as a consultant to Culture Wellness & Development of Marriage and Family Therapy, PC, a multi-cultural, multi-national, multi-ethnic mental health professional corporation. He manages a mid-size Psychotherapy Private Practice in the Bronx, NY. Dr. Edwards also completed the EMDRIA Basic Certification Course of Study.

Presently he serves as an Adjunct Professor at Alliance Graduate School of Counseling teaching courses in Marriage and Family Therapy, Ethnicity & Family Therapy, Professional Ethics, Social and Cultural Foundations for Mental Health Counseling, and Research Methods in Mental Health Professions. He is also on the Faculty of the Harlem Family Institute as a Supervising Teaching Psychoanalyst. He previously served as a professor at Hebrew Union College and Institute of Religion (6yrs) and as a Teaching Fellow at Blanton Peale Graduate Institute (2yrs) both in New York City. Additionally, he supervises persons who have completed their educational requirements and are pursuing licensure in the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. Until July 2012, he served 6 years as the Coordinator of Psychological Testing for the New York Annual Conference Board on Ordained Ministry. Presently as an authorized Ministerial Assessment Specialist by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, he is able to administer Psychological Assessments for both current active clergy and candidates for the ministry in the United Methodist Church and is the sole Psychological Assessment Specialist for the African Methodist Episcopal denomination, NY Annual Conference. He has been married for 29 years to Susan McDonald and is the father of two adult children: Gordon Agyei R. Edwards, Jr and Akilah S. M. Edwards.
