Preacher Bio:
Rev. Dr. Bruce T. Grady is the Executive Presbyter at New Hope Presbytery. He has earned degrees from NC State University (BS), Duke Divinity School (MDiv), Princeton Theological Seminary (ThM) and Columbia University (EdD). As an ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA), Dr. Grady has devoted his life to cultivating relationships between the academy, communities and congregations to address the major challenges of the 21st Century.
Dr. Grady has delivered numerous presentations dealing with racial justice, equity, and inclusion in a variety of forums such as the Oxford Roundtables (Jesus College, University of Oxford), the 98th Annual Session of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASLAH), and the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada: Roundtable Seminar for Newly Appointed Faculty. From 2021 -2023, he served as Director of Pathways of Repair for the Ormond Center at Duke Divinity School. For five years, he was on the faculty of the Multicultural Institute for the Presbyterian Church USA. During these national gatherings, he facilitated workshops that focused on dismantling dehumanizing systems, understanding ‘double consciousness’ within the African American community, and reimagining life together within ‘the beloved community’. From 1997- 2002, he led the South African Task Force of New York City, helping to forge partnerships between the congregations of New York City Presbytery and the Presbytery of Northern Natal (S.A.). Herein, he worked with church leaders, government agencies, healthcare officials, and universities as they grappled with issues around people living with HIV/AIDS. From 2004-2014, he facilitated Christian education workshops for the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. From 2013 – 2017, Dr. Grady served on the Chancellor’s African American Community Advisory Council at NC State University. These conversations focused on how NC State, as a community, creates an environment where everyone is valued and experiences a stronger sense of belonging.
Dr. Grady seeks to provide a discursive space in which people can locate their experience of self, family, and world in a larger narrative of race, gender, class, and faith. Currently, he is the co-chair of the Racial Equity Team for New Hope Presbytery.
